A shocking incident unfolded at Bergamo Orio al Serio International Airport in northern Italy on Tuesday, as a man tragically lost his life after being sucked into the engine of a departing passenger plane.
The victim, whose identity has not been officially released, reportedly ran onto the runway while a Volotea flight was preparing for takeoff. Italian news agency ANSA stated that the man was “swallowed” by the plane’s engine, leading to his immediate death. The aircraft was in the final stages of taxiing when the tragedy occurred.
According to Corriere della Sera, airport officials suggested that the individual may have breached airport security and accessed the active runway. Authorities are still investigating how the man managed to reach such a high-security area undetected and what his motives may have been.
In a statement, Bergamo airport’s administration confirmed that flight operations were temporarily suspended due to what was initially described as a “problem with the taxiway.” All departures and arrivals were halted for several hours as emergency services and investigators responded to the scene.
The airline involved, Volotea, has not released a detailed statement but is reportedly cooperating with Italian aviation authorities. Passengers on board the affected flight were safely evacuated and later rebooked on other services.
The incident has raised serious questions about airport security protocols and prompted an urgent review by Italian aviation authorities to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
