The Integrated Transport Centre (Abu Dhabi Mobility) of the Department of Municipalities and Transport announced that heavy vehicles are prohibited to enter Abu Dhabi Island via Al Maqta Bridge, starting from Monday (June 16, 2025).
An alternative route will be used via Musaffah Bridge in order to maintain smooth traffic flow.
Earlier, the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) announced changes to the ban on heavy vehicles including trucks, tankers and heavy equipment on Abu Dhabi roads, effective Jan.27, as part of its ongoing efforts to regulate traffic flow and enhance road safety in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
To ensure smooth traffic flow and improve road safety in Abu Dhabi, which is witnessing a significant increase in the number of vehicles, it was decided, as of Jan.27, to ban the movement of heavy vehicles on Abu Dhabi City’s roads from Monday through Thursday between 6:30am to 9am and between 3pm and 7pm.
On Fridays, heavy vehicles are prohibited during the same morning period as on weekdays and from 11am to 1pm.
This amendment was adopted to mitigate the impact of overlapping light and heavy vehicles on the road network during rush hour, which caused variations in vehicle speeds, traffic accidents and increasing traffic density. It also plays a role in protecting roads and bridges from damage resulting from excess loads.
Abu Dhabi Mobility co-ordinates directly with Abu Dhabi Police to ensure that heavy vehicle owners abide by the specified times.
Ministry of Interior’s statistics showed that heavy trucks caused 321 traffic accidents in 2024, resulting in 40 deaths and 251 injuries
