Sharjah Police have strengthened its efforts to protect lives and ensure the safety of road users by implementing a set of proactive traffic strategies, which led the traffic fatality rate to drop by 24 per cent in 2024 compared to 2023.
The rate fell to 1.76 deaths per 100,000 people, reflecting the effectiveness of the approach adopted to enhance road safety and prevent accidents.
As part of its field efforts, the Traffic and Patrol Department, in co-operation with the Security Media Department, launched 12 awareness campaigns targeting dangerous behaviours that negatively impact road safety, most notably distraction, improper parking, pedestrian crossings from non-designated areas, speeding, and unsafe driving by cyclists. As many as 905,895 people across the emirate benefited from the awareness campaigns and programmes.
The Traffic and Patrol Department also continued to support the road safety system by securing 272 events and activities organised in the emirate and providing traffic support for 1,976 maintenance and development operations within road and infrastructure projects, thereby enhancing traffic flow and raising the level of preparedness and public safety.
The results reflected community engagement and a high level of awareness and commitment, Brigadier Mohammed Alai Al Naqbi, Director of Traffic and Patrol Department, said, thanking the public for their co-operation and active role in achieving such progress.
He explained that these achievements embodied Sharjah Police’s vision aimed at enhancing road safety through integrated efforts in the areas of prevention, awareness, and control as part of an integrated system that seeks to protect lives and improve traffic safety indicators.
