Sharjah Police’s security surveillance systems caught a driver who had installed fake number plates on his vehicle in an attempt to cheat traffic systems.
Security follow-up revealed that the driver had committed 137 traffic violations, totaling more than Dhs104,000.
Legal action was taken to record all violations on his traffic code and refer him to the public prosecution.
Colonel Omar Mohammed Bu Ghanem, Deputy Director of the Traffic and Patrols Department at Sharjah Police, explained that the driver was arrested as a result of effective co-ordination between field traffic personnel and the command and control centre’s team.
"The vehicle was monitored by advanced security surveillance systems deployed on the emirate’s internal and external roads, which enabled specialised teams to identify the vehicle whose driver had deliberately installed number plates different from those officially registered with traffic authorities in an attempt to mislead security surveillance systems," he added.
"Close field monitoring helped the teams track the vehicle’s route, arrest the driver and impound the vehicle," he said.
"More investigations revealed that he had committed 137 violations totaling Dhs104,730," he added, noting that as many as 308 black points were recorded in his traffic file, while the vehicle’s legal impoundment period exceeded 764 days.
Bu Ghanem explained that certain behaviours such as installing forged number plates or obscuring number plates are not regarded simply as traffic violations but can turn into criminal cases requiring legal accountability.
Through their smart monitoring and surveillance system, Sharjah Police closely monitor such violations, he said, warning of the danger of such behaviours, which pose a direct threat to the safety of roads and road users.
He affirmed that Sharjah Police would not tolerate such irresponsible practices and would continue to take firm and deterrent legal action against whoever dares to violate regulations with a view to protecting lives and property and enhance the safety and stability of society.
