The UAE highlighted the importance of the establishment of a zone free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East region.

During the general debate of the United Nations General Assembly meeting on regional disarmament, the UAE stressed the importance of efforts aimed at establishing a zone free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East region.

The UAE Mission to the Security Council said, “The UAE stressed the importance of member states complying with International Atomic Energy Agency standards, building greater confidence, and enhancing cooperation regarding their nuclear activities.”

Ahmed Al-Emad, UAE member to the UN said, “I can only begin my speech by expressing our sincere condolences and solidarity with the brotherly Palestinian people, who are facing at this moment the scourge of human suffering as a result of the continued indiscriminate and intense Israeli bombing of the Gaza Strip, with 60% of them forced to flee despite the fact that there is no safe place for them, while the electricity, fuel and water are cut off.

The UAE stresses the need for an immediate ceasefire and to address the humanitarian catastrophe affecting the people of Gaza.
Within the scope of our discussion today, I would first like to add my country's voice to the statements of the Arab Group and the Non-Aligned Movement.

“Mr president, Today, the world is exposed to many armed conflicts that have reached their peak since World War II, threatening the disarmament system and international security. Perhaps the Middle East is one of the most prominent regional regions that needs to make intensive efforts to achieve the goals of disarmament and security stability.

Therefore, my country attaches utmost importance to all efforts aimed at establishing a zone free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East region.”

“The UAE renews its commitment to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and affirms the right of countries to the peaceful use of nuclear energy, as my country is a model in the region for full compliance in the peaceful use of nuclear energy,” said Al-Emad.

Al-Emad also said, “As part of our endeavour to strengthen these efforts, my country supported the United Nations initiative to hold a conference on establishing a zone free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East, as we were keen to actively participate in all previous sessions.

“My country looks forward to participating in the next and fourth session of this conference, which is scheduled to be held next November. We also urge all invited parties to participate constructively in this conference to ensure the strengthening of regional and international peace and security stability.”
