Australian TV presenter gives bizarre name to her newborn son ‘Methamphetamine Rules’

What’s in a name? Well, with all due apologies to Shakespeare, it is anything but ‘sweet’ or normal, going by current trends.
The more shocking or weird the names are, the more headlines they grab – on social media in particular.
To illustrate a few: Elon Musk has named his youngest child Techno Mechanicus, singer Rihanna calls her baby son Riot Rose, while American filmmaker Robert Rodriguez’s sons are called Racer, Rebel, Rocket and Rogue. However, the mother of all bizarre names perhaps goes to Australian TV presenter Kirsten Drysdale: she calls her newborn son Methamphetamine Rules.
Now, why on earth would she do that, name her infant after a stimulant that is used more as a recreational drug? Did she do it just on a lark, only to see whether it passes muster where the civic authorities are concerned? Maybe.
She was working on a story and one question that regular popped up from viewers was: “What can I legally name my baby?”
As she was heavily pregnant, Drysdale, in a flashbulb moment, came up with the very outrageous ‘meth’ name for her newborn. She was sure the department in the state of New South Wales that deals with births, deaths and marriages would promptly trash it. To her utter shock, it passed muster – it was approved.
“I don’t know how it slipped through,” Drysdale said. “I’m not sure if someone was overworked, or if it was automated somewhere. Or possibly, maybe they thought Methamphetamine was a Greek name,” according to a report in a section of the Australian media.
Thankfully, the Registrar admitted it was a rare miss. The son’s real name is likely to be approved any day now.
