Sharjah Aquarium is set to mark World Turtle Day with release eight medium to large turtles.

The turtles, ranging from 5 to 30 years old, have undergone rehabilitation after being found in poor condition and are now ready to be set free.

Taking place on 23rd May, the event is part of Sharjah Museums Authority's long-running Social Responsibility Initiative, "Because We Care," which was first launched in 2009 and has continued annually for 16 years.

The initiative aims to emphasise the role of Sharjah Aquarium in spreading awareness among the public on the importance of the marine environment and its creatures. It also highlights the species of turtles that inhabit UAE's coasts and the efforts of the Aquarium and other institutions to protect them.

Public members are invited to attend the turtle release that will be taking place in cooperation with Al Hamriya Municipality from 10:00 to 11:00.

Rashed Al Shamsi, Curator of Sharjah Aquarium, was present during the event, accompanied by a number of officials from Al Hamriya Municipality and other relevant departments. "This event serves as a valuable opportunity to educate the public about the crucial role these creatures play in our marine ecosystems,” he said.

Al Shamsi added, "Through our 'Because We Care' initiative, we aim to inspire positive change in the way we view and treat our marine environment and to encourage community members to be more involved.”
