Pregnant woman burnt by her mother-in-law in Iraq

Banaz Farouk, 21, pregnant and married for 7 months in the city of Kirkuk in northern Iraq, was burned by her mother-in-law, conniving with her husband, according to what the victim, who is lying between life and death in the emergency hospital for burns in the city of Sulaymaniyah in the Kurdistan region of Iraq.
The degree of burns reached 80%, according to what the victim’s family told the local media.

According to the doctors, her condition was very critical, and her life and the life of her fetus were at risk.

The victim affirmed to the media that the cause of the accident was that her mother-in-law asked her to clean the fish and prepare it for cooking, but she told her that she was not good at that, so the mother in law poured gasoline on the floor and burned the victim after lighting the gasoline with a lighter.

The crime sparked outrage in Iraqi social networks, where pioneers demanded that the victim's husband and his mother be punished with the most severe penalties, as the crime was an attempted murder.

The victim's family indicated that the security services arrested the husband, but his mother was still on the run.

It is worth mentioning that statistics of the raqi Ministry of Interior for the year 2021, showed that 873 cases of family violence were recorded, 786 cases of them were against women and 87 cases of violence were against children.

Civil and human rights organisations indicated that the numbers are higher and that many cases of violence against women are kept secret and not registered with the responsible security and health authorities.
