NRIs can soon pay water, electricity bills on behalf of their families in India

Non-Resident Indians can soon pay electricity and phone bills of their families in India.

They can even pay school and college fees of their children, all thanks to the Bharat Bill Payment System.

According to a report in a section of the Indian media, the Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS) is an interoperable platform for standardised bill payments. Over 8 crore transactions are processed on a monthly basis.

Reserve Bank of India Governor Shaktikanta Das said that BBPS has revolutionised the bill payment experience for users in India. Now users overseas can comfortably pay utility bills on behalf of their families.

"This will greatly benefit the senior citizens in particular," he said.
