Rishi Sunak to run in race for British PM, only 'serious candidate' with integrity

Former British finance minister Rishi Sunak will pitch himself as a "serious candidate for a serious time" for the leadership race, arguing he is the only candidate with integrity, the Times reported on Friday.

Sunak, who resigned this week in protest at Johnson's leadership, will argue that he can salvage the Conservative Party's "brand" and has the experience to handle the economic crisis, The Times' political editor Steven Swinford said. With the unceremonious exit of Boris Johnson, names of some frontrunners in the race for the British Prime Ministership have emerged.

A YouGov poll says Ben Wallace, who was the Secretary of State for Defence in the Boris government, is a top favourite. Wallace was a force of standing over his handling of the situation arising out of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Mordaunt is Minister of State for International Trade in the outgoing government.

Her name has, though, been circulating for some time. Interestingly, Suella Fernandes Braverman, who is also of Indian heritage, did not draw any backing.
