A single-engine training aircraft crashed in a residential area of the Turkish city of Bursa, killing the flight instructor and student but causing no further injuries, the local authorities said.

Local media footage showed orange flames and dense plumes of smoke billowing over a residential street.

The city has a population of more than two million people.

Large crowds gathered near the site to watch firefighters work to put out the flames.

The plane appeared to land in the middle of the street, between two rows of houses, damaging several parked cars.

Bursa Governor Yakup Canbolat said the flight instructor and student pilot were both killed.

According to preliminary findings, there were no other injuries, state news agency Anadolu said, citing Canbolat.

The governor said that the 2002 model plane crashed shortly after taking off from the local airport, apparently "for technical reasons."
