The girl was stabbed several times at about 11am at Stagg High School in Stockton in California's Central Valley and died at a hospital, Stockton Unified School District Superintendent John Ramirez Jr. said at a news conference. Her name wasn't immediately released.
The attacker, a man in his 40s, was quickly detained. His name was not released. The man drove to the school and went through a campus gate, police said.
He attacked before security and staff could stop him, Ramirez said. "We definitely will be re-evaluating” campus security, he said.
The school was placed on lockdown after the stabbing. Police initially said the teenager appeared to have been targeted. But Officer Joe Silva told the Sacramento Bee on Monday evening that detectives now believe it was a random act.
A motive for the killing remains under investigation, police said.
The four children, who were all under the age of 12, were declared dead at the scene in the small town of Lancaster, near Los Angeles. The children's grandmother, who was in her 50s, also died in the shooting on Sunday evening.
The new year has brought a shocking string of mass killings in the US — six in less than three weeks, accounting for 39 deaths. Three have occurred in California since Jan. 16, according to a database compiled by the media.
The crash began with a reported stabbing in Dayton, police said, and a pickup truck accident in the Dayton suburb of Riverside at about 7:30 p.m. Apparently, the suspect in the reported stabbing fled that scene and then crashed the pickup, police said.
In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation called on the Israeli authorities to reduce escalation and not take steps to exacerbate tension and instability in the region.
