A 17-year-old Egyptian girl Basant Khaled committed suicide after she had been blackmailed by a young man on social media.

According to security sources, Basant, who was studying at the secondary level in the Gharbia Governorate, put an end to her life by taking an agricultural pesticide. She was rushed by her family to the hospital for medical treatment but died two days later.

The girl’s sister said in her testimony to the investigation authorities that her sister had been blackmailed by a person by fabricating her photos in indecent video clips to pressure her into entering into an illegal relationship with her.

She added that her sister had left a message for her family before she committed suicide in which she confirmed that her photos posted on social media were fabricated and that she later fell into a state of depression. The deceased concluded her message by asking her family to forgive her.
