A rare snowfall was witnessed in the Egyptian city of Hurghada on Sunday, with authorities issued warning of more unstable weather in coming days.

The city has also seen heavy rain in the past couple of days.

Coinciding with the winter season, many parts of Egypt, including the coastal city of Hurghada, have been experiencing heavy rain, thunderstorms, snowfall and a noticeable drop in temperatures since Thursday.

Several areas of Greater Cairo, Sinai, the Red Sea, Minya, Assiut, and other governorates were covered by dense clouds and hit by moderate to heavy rainfall on Saturday, reported the Egyptian Meteorological Authority (EMA).

The school in the governorates of Alexandria, Beheira, Gharbiya, Kafr ElSheikh and Dahaqliya was closed on Saturday to ensure safety of students over the bout of bad weather that is expected to continue till Monday, according to the EMA.

The EMA forecast on Wednesday a five-day cold spell accompanied by moderate to heavy rain and wind in Cairo, the Nile Delta and north Upper Egypt.

In December 2021, Heavy snow, accompanied by thunderstorms, blanketed the coastal city of Alexandria in Egypt.

Local residents said that it is the first snowfall in almost a decade. The foul weather was a result of a spell of bad weather, which hit the north of the country.
