A New Zealand MP Julie Anne Genter cycled to hospital during labour to give birth to a baby girl.

The family said that she was already in labour and gave birth an hour later.

Hours later, Genter said on his Facebook page: "Good news ... at 3.04 am, we welcomed the new member of our family.

"The contractions weren't strong when we left at 2am to go to the hospital — although the interval between contractions were two and three minutes and they started increasing by the time we got there ten minutes later," Genter said.

Green Party’s Genter is party's transport spokesperson, whose Facebook profile includes the phrase "I love my bike,” and she also cycled to the hospital in 2018 to give birth to her first child.

The island nation of 5 million people already has a reputation of humble politicians.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern became the first Prime Minister in New Zealand history to take maternity leave and the second prime minister in the world to give birth while in office after the late Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.

Ardern took her three-month-old daughter with her to a United Nations meeting, as she was still breastfeeding.
