At least one person was killed and four others wounded when a bomb exploded on a bus on Saturday, near a Taliban checkpoint in a Kabul suburb, officials said.

"I was in my car, and there was an explosion in the car in front of us," an eyewitness told reporters, adding: "It was completely burned."

He pointed out that the explosion occurred near a Taliban checkpoint, and that shooting was heard later.

A nearby hospital published a notice saying it had received one body and four wounded.

The spokesman for the Taliban government, Zabihullah Mujahid, tweeted: One person was killed and two were wounded. The explosion occurred the day after at least three people were killed and 15 wounded when a bomb exploded in a mosque in Nangarhar.

The Nangarhar governor's office issued a statement indicating that the authorities had arrested two people, without adding any details.

"Further investigations into the accident are still ongoing and additional measures will be taken," the statement said.

This bombing, which has not yet been claimed by any party, shows the many challenges facing the new Taliban regime in Afghanistan, while the United Nations warns that the country is on the verge of the worst humanitarian crisis in the world.

Last week, at least 19 people were killed, including a senior Taliban leader, and 50 others were wounded in an attack by Daesh on Kabul National Military Hospital.
