The mayor of Sierra Leone's capital and the media said that a fuel tanker exploded on Friday killing at least 92 people in the capital Freetown.

Pictures posted on social media showed a number of victims lying on the streets of Freetown with severe burns, with nearby shops and homes on fire.

"The videos and photos circulating on social media are horrific," said Yvonne Aki Sawyer, mayor of the coastal city. "Residents said that more than 100 people have lost their lives."

Yvonne added in a post on Facebook that the explosion, which followed by a collision with a truck, claimed the lives of victims, including those who flocked to collect fuel leaked from the wrecked vehicle.

The extent of property damage is not yet known, the mayor said, adding that the police and her deputy are on the scene to assist disaster management officials.
