Mohamed Salah gave a speech after receiving a standing ovation from the audience, and said: "Good evening, I am happy to be here in this fantastic and wonderful concert, I am delighted, because I grew up near the water, the waters of the Mediterranean.

"Water is vital to us, and to the entire planet, seas and oceans, there may be more plastic than fish in the ocean unless we do something about it now," he added.

"It's terrifying, but ingenious ways have been found to save our oceans," added the 29-year-old.

The Egyptian player then presented the three contenders for the Earthshot award in the ocean rescue category, where each of them specialized in devising a solution to save water. Each year, a £ 1million prize will be awarded to 5 projects working to find solutions to the world's environmental problems over the next decade.

The annual awards were created by the Duke of Cambridge to recognize people who are trying to save the planet in various ways.
