Worldwide COVID-19 caseload crosses 238 million

More than 238,021,172 people have been reported infected by the novel coronavirus globally and near 5 million people have died, according to a reputable website https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/ tally on Saturday.

Infections have been reported in more than 210 countries and territories since the first cases were identified in December 2019.

Latin America's death toll from Covid-19 surpassed 1.5 million on Friday, according to a media tally drawn from official figures.

The toll is at least 1,500,350 deaths, with more than 45 million cases of the virus recorded. Brazil has surpassed 600,000 deaths on Friday, the second hardest hit country after the United States.

In its latest update on Saturday morning, the University's Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed that the current global caseload, death toll and the total number number of vaccine doses administered stood at 237,210,769, 4,841,912 and 6,424,300,847, respectively.

The US continues to be the worst-hit country with the world's highest number of cases and deaths at 44,288,729 and 712,693, according to the CSSE.

In terms of infections, India follows in the second place with 33,915,569 cases.

India on Saturday reported 19,740 fresh COVID cases and 248 deaths in the last 24 hours, the Union Health Ministry said.

The recovery of 23,070 patients in the last 24 hours has increased the cumulative tally of recovered patients to 3,32,48,291.

Consequently, India's recovery rate stands at 97.98 per cent, the highest since March 2020.

The active caseload is presently at 2,36,643, which is the lowest in 206 days. Active cases presently constitute 0.70 per cent of the country's total positive cases.
