A New Jersey city Police Officer Eduardo Matute has been hailed as a hero after he caught a baby with his hands who was thrown off a second-storey balcony.

The miraculous catch likely saved the life of a 1-month old baby.

Social media users and residents have called local authorities to honour Matute for his heroic act.

A picture of Matute is doing the rounds on social media in which Matute can be seen lovingly holding the baby he saved after what was a very tense and dangerous stand off.

The County Prosecutor’s Office stated, “We especially want to acknowledge the actions and bravery of the negotiator and first-responding PO Joseph Casey, South District PO Eduardo Matute who safely caught the baby after being dropped from a 2nd floor balcony. "

The baby was rushed to the hospital for evaluation as a precautionary measure.

The man who threw the baby has been arrested and an investigation is underway.

Local media reported that the baby was not hurt and is good health.

The man is facing several charges, including attempted murder.
