Abu Dhabi schools to reopen play grounds, canteens for students

Schools can reopen necessary public areas to improve social interaction between students, including play areas.

The Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Khnowledge (Adek) has revealed the updated policies of the precautionary measures applied in private schools and educational institution in Abu Dhabi for the academic year 2021/22.

The policies include reopening play areas for students, resuming school canteen services in full, in addition to physical education programmes and extracurricular activities with adherence to precautionary measures.

The updated policies are in line with the decisions issued by the Committee for the Management of Emergencies, Crises and Disasters in Abu Dhabi.

It includes extensive preventive measures to ensure the safety of students and all members of the teaching faculty. This includes teachers, administrators and visitors from all private schools and educational associations and their institutions.

The capacity of class groups in the kindergarten and first semester stages (second grade / third year or less) who are unable to adhere to physical distancing measures will be increased from 10 to 16 students per group.

The update procedure allows the kitchen of the school cafeteria to reopen when food is served in accordance with Abu Dhabi’s Agriculture and Food Safety Authority, such as providing food in the form of meals customised for each student.

The schools will allow students to practice various activities, including swimming, with the application of a set of precautionary measures.

Schools will be required to sterilise halls and areas for sports activities and equipment used in the interval between each use by different groups.

In addition, schools will resume organising extra-curricular activities exclusively for school students, with a commitment to implement risk assessment mechanisms and safe operating procedures, including physical distancing and wearing masks.

On the other hand, the suspension of renting school sports facilities to external parties continues until further notice.

Sarah Musallam, Head of the Department of Education and Knowledge, said, “Based on our experience in the past year, and thanks to continuous coordination with relevant health authorities, teachers and parents, we are confident that the new school year will mark a wonderful and safe start through the implementation of the updated policies.  

“Our priorities are to provide high-quality classroom education opportunities to the largest possible number of students.

“We will also continue to review these procedures to ensure that all necessary measures are in place for the safety of students, teachers, and the entire school community.
