A divorcee woman, who had been chained and kept in a dark room without electricity by her brothers for the last year was rescued by Pakistani police on Tuesday.

The incident happened in a village in district Swabi of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province.

According to Swabi District Police Officer (DPO), Mohammad Shoaib, they had received information about the captivity of the woman in her brothers’ house.

After verification, the police party raided the house and freed the woman from her brothers’ illegal detention, Shoaib added.

He further said that the woman is around 33 and she is the mother of two children, but her husband divorced her in 2016.

The divorce enraged her brothers as she wanted to move court against her former husband for expenses for the children, the DPO said.

As she was reluctant to give up, her brothers not only tortured but also locked and chained her in a room and she had been kept like an animal, Shoaib said.

Police arrested her three brothers while the fourth one is on the run.

Another police official said that the woman had been locked up as her brothers blamed her for the divorce and were also against her seeking a job and going to court to pursue the case against her former husband. She was also constantly tortured by them and they also threatened to kill her, he said further.

The woman stated in her police complaint that she married 13 years ago and had two children, a girl and a boy.
