The Abu Dhabi Misdemeanor Court issued judgments in three separate traffic cases, convicting five young drivers of reckless driving on the highway by showing off in residential neighbourhoods, thereby endangering their lives and the lives of road users and causing damage to public roads.

The defendants were sentenced to six months in jail but the imprisonment was replaced by a three-month community service.

They were also fined Dhs50,000, while their driving licences were suspended for six months and their vehicles were confiscated for sale at an auction, provided that the price would be used in repairing the public roads that were damaged by the defendants.

Meanwhile, the Public Prosecution in Abu Dhabi praised the role played by the Abu Dhabi Police in arresting the defendants most speedily, stressing that show-off driving on public streets is one of the most irresponsible behaviours by young people as it poses a threat to their lives and the lives of other road users.

It underlined the need for educational and community entities to co-operate with the concerned authorities and intensify awareness campaigns to put an end to reckless drivers’ irresponsible behaviours on roads and hence protect their lives and the lives of other road users.

Article 348 of the Federal Penal Code stipulates that: “whoever deliberately perpetrates an act that exposes the life, health, security or freedom of human beings to danger, will face either detention or pay a fine,” the Public Prosecution said.

Earlier, the Public Prosecution referred the defendants to the Misdemeanor Court on charges of recklessly driving vehicles without plate numbers on the highway, causing noise and disturbance in residential neighborhoods, and damaging road surface and public property.
