South Africa tightens its COVID-19 restrictions

South Africa on Tuesday has prohibited sales of drinks and has made masks compulsory in public places due to warning.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that pandemics far more deadly than COVID-19 lies ahead.

Winter came with a surge in the spread of the virus, pushing global cases to almost 81 million, despite the rollout of vaccine.

"We have let down our guard, and unfortunately we are now paying the price," said South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on Monday.

Ramphosa added that data showed "excessive alcohol consumption" played a part in the spike of the cases.
