Beijing reinforces restrictions as coronavirus cases spike

Beijing tightened its restrictions due to worries of mass travel leading to a spike in COVID-19 cases.

Following a meeting, authorities have urged all districts to go into “emergency mode.” It has sealed off residential compounds and villages where infections were detected.

Shunyi district, where all recent coronavirus cases were detected is embarking on a testing drive for its 800,000 residents.

Shunyi’s neighbouring districts have tested their residents and others have reimposed temperature checks upon entry.

According to reports, Chinese authorities are working towards vaccinating 50 million people in high-risk groups before the Lunar New Year holidays.
