Seven dead, two in a coma after drinking hand sanitiser in Russia

In the republic of Yakutia, Russia, seven people passed away and two are in a coma following the consumption of diluted hand sanitiser.

According to a statement published by Russian investigators, nine indigenes of Tomtor village fell ill on Saturday after consuming diluted hand sanitiser they got from a local shop.

Investigators reported finding an unlabeled five-litre canister at the scene. The content was tested and it had 69% methanol, industrial non-drinking type of alcohol.

Three died on the spot, six were flown to the hospital. Four died in the hospital and doctors are working hard to save the lives of the remaining two- a 48-year-old woman and a 32-year-old man.

Yakutia's health authorities on Sunday banned the sale of the methanol-based hand sanitiser.
