Bahrain PM Khalifa Bin Salman passes away

The Prime Minister of Bahrain, Khalifa Bin Salman Al Khalifa has died at the age of 84 on Wednesday, announced the Royal Court of Bahrain.

According to Bahrain's state news agency, Sheikh Khalifa passed away on Wednesday morning at Mayo Clinic hospital in the United States.

The burial ceremony will take place upon the repatriation of his body and the funeral will be limited to a specific number of relatives, the statement said.

Official mourning has been declared for a week. Government ministries and departments will be closed for three days starting Thursday.

Khalifa Bin Salman has served as the Prime Minister of Bahrain since 1970, taking office over a year before Bahrain's independence on  August 15, 1971. He was the longest-serving current Prime Minister of any government in the world.
