Mini-lockdowns in capital as Pakistan virus caseload rises

The Pakistan government has imposed a mini-lockdown in some areas of the capital, Islamabad, sealing off hot spots to contain the rising coronavirus.

Pakistani authorities say that the restrictions will remain in place until there is an improvement in the situation.

The coronavirus death toll reached 7,000 in Pakistan as 23 more deaths were reported on Tuesday. The total number of cases has now reached 346,476.

In the last 24 hours, 1,637 new cases were reported countrywide.

Similar mini-lockdowns have also been imposed in hot spots of Pakistan’s other major cities, including the southern port city of Karachi, the eastern city of Lahore and the garrison city of Rawalpindi.

But people are still ignoring social distancing rules, although authorities are fining those not wearing masks and violating social distancing rules.

More than 50.74 million people have been reported to be infected by the novel coronavirus globally and 1,260,738 have died, according to a Reuters tally. Infections have been reported in more than 210 countries and territories since the first cases were identified in China in December 2019.
