Global coronavirus cases cross 38 million

More than 38.09 million people have been reported to be infected by the novel coronavirus globally and around 1.09 million have died, according to a Reuters tally published on Wednesday.

With 215,119 deaths and around 7.83 million confirmed cases, the United States topped the list of twenty countries with the highest recorded infections and deaths in the world, followed by India, Brazil, Russia, Colombia, Argentina, Spain, Peru, Mexico, France, South Africa, the United Kingdom, Iran, Chile, Iraq, Bangladesh, Italy, the Philippines, Indonesia, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and Turkey.

Infections have been reported in more than 210 countries and territories since the first cases were identified in China in December 2019.

India's tally of coronavirus infections rose by 63,509 in the last 24 hours to stand at 7.24 million on Wednesday, health ministry data showed.

Deaths from COVID-19 infections rose by 730 to 110,586, Reuters quoted the ministry as saying on Wednesday.

India crossed the 7 million mark on Sunday, adding a million cases in just 13 days. It has the world's second-highest tally after the United States, where the figure is nearing 8 million.

Germany on Wednesday announced 5,132 new coronavirus, COVID-19, cases, bringing the total infections in the country to 334,585.

Reuters quoted data from the Robert Koch Institute for infectious diseases as saying that the reported death toll rose by 40, taking the tally of fatalities to 9,677.
