Worldwide coronavirus cases cross 28.33 million, death toll at 910,299

More than 28.33 million people have been reported to be infected by the novel coronavirus globally and 910,299 have died, according to a Reuters tally.

Infections have been reported in more than 210 countries and territories since the first cases were identified in China in December 2019.

India’s confirmed coronavirus tally has crossed 4.6 million after a record surge of 97,570 new cases in 24 hours.

India on Saturday also reported another 1,201 deaths, taking total fatalities to 77,472.

Infections are growing faster in India than anywhere else in the world and it is the second worst-hit country behind the United States. Experts say India’s limited and restrictive testing has masked the actual toll even as daily tests have been ramped up to more than 1 million.

Coronavirus cases in Colombia, which ended more than five months of lockdown at the start of the month, surpassed 700,000 on Friday as deaths from the virus climbed toward 23,000.

The Andean country has 702,088 confirmed cases of the virus according to the health ministry, with 22,518 reported deaths. Active cases number 95,398.

The number of new, confirmed COVID-19 cases in France rose by 9,406 over the last 24 hours, the country's health ministry said on Friday, to stand at a total of 363,350.

The number of COVID-19 deaths also climbed by 40 over the last 24 hours, to reach a total of 30,893 casualties.

France's has the seventh-highest COVID death toll in the world
