Seven Afghan forces were killed Thursday in an attack officials blamed on the Taliban, the first deadly assault since a three-day ceasefire ended.

District police chief Hussain Shah said Taliban fighters set fire to the checkpoint, killing five security force personnel. Two more were shot dead.
Takhar provincial health director Abdul Qayoum confirmed the incident but said 34 security personnel had been killed — including the deputy police chief of the province.
