The Criminal Court of Sharjah Criminal on Monday postponed a case in which two Asians were charged with attempting to bribe a cop in order to arrest a person.

They reportedly offered to give the cop Dhs100,000.

The defendants confessed to the charges before the Public Prosecution.

The major defendant admitted that he had offered a bribe of Dhs100,000 to the cop who was on duty, while the second acted as a mediator to help him give the bribe to the cop.

Facing charges of bribing a public official while on duty, the major defendant confessed that he knew a person abusing drugs, and told his friend “the second defendant” about that.

The latter told him that he knew a police official, who could arrest that person in return for a sum of money, and he would help him give the money to the cop. Accordingly, the major defendant gave him Dhs50,000 to give it to the cop.

However, the second defendant denied the charges against him, stressing that his confessions before the Public Prosecution were the result of fear, because it was the first time he was being interrogated and appearing before an investigative body.

He acknowledged his relation with the major defendant, and his knowledge of a friend working in the police.

He also noted that he had indeed called the cop as a friend and did not ask him to arrest anyone, adding that he was arrested inside his vehicle on Buhairah Corniche in Sharjah. For its part, the Public Prosecution requested the Court to uphold the conviction of the defendants. The Sharjah Criminal Court ordered the adjournment of the hearing to Oct.13 to hear the witness’ statements.

In a separate case recently, the Sharjah Criminal Court postponed a case involving two Asian siblings charged with assaulting and restraining a cop.  

According to the police records, the witness confirmed he had alerted the police about a fight in the house next to him. It was a brawl involving a group of Asians, he told the police.The assaulted cop went to the scene, asked the first defendant to show his ID card, but he refused.
