A new round of sanctions were imposed on Moscow on Saturday by the United States over the 2018 poisoning of former double-agent Sergei Skripal in the United Kingdom.
Washington said it will oppose “the extension of any loan or financial or technical assistance to Russia” by international financial institutions and put limits on US banks from financing Russian sovereign debt, the spokesperson for the US State Department said in a statement.
The US will also limit the export of goods and technology to Russia, the spokesperson added.
Volodymyr Zelenskiy urged his compatriots on Tuesday to stay calm as Russia amasses troops on the border. The rare sanctions threat from the US comes as NATO places forces on standby and reinforces eastern Europe with more ships and fighter jets in response to Russia's troop build-up.
In the face of the worst stand-off between Russia and the West since the Cold War, diplomatic action has kicked into high gear with European leaders zipping across the continent seeking to defuse the crisis.
Johnson also said Defence Secretary Ben Wallace and Foreign Secretary Liz Truss will both travel to Moscow soon. His comments come as officials in the United States say an attack by Russia on Ukraine could occur within days or weeks.
