FUJAIRAH: The Fujairah Appellate court looked into the case of an Arab charged with attempted suicide inside a prison.

Details date back to the time when the suspect was convicted of stealing a mobile phone and was sentenced to imprisonment and deportation.

He allegedly attempted suicide inside the prison but was rescued and sent to court.

He told the court he did not steal the phone but had actually bought it from an anonymous person, not realising it was stolen.

He added that after the verdict he was frustrated because of his separation from his family. He also feared the deportation would deprive his children of school.

In another unrelated event,  Ajman Police arrested an Asian, 22, for attempting to blackmail an Arab girl whose photos were accessed by the defendant after the latter had been added to her WhatsApp group by mistake.

Lieutenant Colonel Yahya Al Matroushi, Director of Al Hamidiya Comprehensive Police Station, said an Arab girl in her twenties filed a complaint in which she said she was being blackmailed by a stranger who sent her private photos combining both of them and threatened that he would post the photos if she did not give him money.

The girl said a friend of her set up a WhatsApp group to which she added Arab girls for arranging a visit to a park in the emirate. The girl, however, said she was later surprised by a message with a photoshopped picture combining her with a stranger and requesting money in return for not posting the photo.

The girls wondered how the stranger was added to their group but discovered later that his telephone number belonged to one of them a year ago.

Following intensive investigations, the police arrested the defendant and seized his mobile phone.

On interrogation, the defendant confessed to having photoshopped the photo to show him with the girl. The defendant and the case file were referred to the public prosecution.
