At just 18 years old, Mohamed was facing serious health challenges caused by severe obesity. Weighing 248 kg with a BMI of 94.4 kg/m², he was living with Class 3 obesity, the most severe category of obesity. Looking for a way to improve his health and regain his independence, he underwent weight loss surgery in Abu Dhabi at NMC Royal Hospital Khalifa City, taking the first step towards a healthier future.
Mohamed had struggled with obesity since childhood, with significant weight gain occurring after leg surgery when he was 10 years old. Over the years, his mobility became increasingly limited, eventually requiring the use of a wheelchair. He also experienced breathing difficulties and developed several related health conditions, including pre-diabetes, fatty liver disease, and severe obstructive sleep apnea. Because of the complexity of his condition, he required specialised severe obesity treatment to address these complications and improve his overall health and quality of life.
In line with Department of Health (DOH) and international bariatric guidelines, Mohamed was evaluated and prepared for surgery by the multidisciplinary team at NMC Royal Hospital Khalifa City. His care involved specialists from multiple disciplines, including dietetics, psychiatry, endocrinology, gastroenterology, pulmonology, cardiology, nursing, and patient support services, ensuring that every aspect of his condition was carefully managed before treatment.
Following a comprehensive assessment, the team recommended a laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. This minimally invasive procedure reduces the size of the stomach, helping patients feel full sooner and consume less food. Mohamed received detailed counselling about the procedure, expected outcomes, and potential risks before moving forward with treatment.
Given the complexity of the case, extensive planning and specialised equipment were required. The procedure was performed using a dedicated bariatric operating table, extended surgical instruments, and advanced surgical devices. Two consultant anesthesiologists, Dr. Ahmed Abdelmotalib Ali and Dr. Rohit Krishna, were also part of the surgical team. The operation was successfully carried out by experienced bariatric surgeons in Abu Dhabi, Dr. Bart van Wagensveld and Dr. Hazem Al Momani.
The surgery was completed successfully without complications. After spending one night in the intensive care unit for observation, Mohamed was able to start drinking fluids and walking the following day. He was discharged home shortly afterwards, pain-free and in excellent condition, beginning the next stage of his recovery journey.
Mohamed's story demonstrates the life-changing impact that expert, multidisciplinary care can have for patients living with severe obesity. It also reflects the growing advances in obesity treatment in the UAE, where specialised centres are helping patients achieve better health, greater mobility, and an improved quality of life through evidence-based treatment and long-term support.
