A 2-day old newborn made a successful recovery after a complex Gastrointestinal Surgery at Fakeeh University Hospital (FUH) in Dubai Silicon Oasis. A multi-disciplinary team of experts including Pediatric Surgeon, Neonatologists and Anesthesia team played a crucial role in achieving a positive prognosis, paving the way for a healthy future for the newborn.

Mrs. Ronita (name changed for confidentiality purposes) welcomed her twins to the world on 14^th November at Fakeeh University Hospital. However, her delivery plan took an unexpected turn when Mrs. Ronita had to deliver the babies a little earlier than their expected date of arrival.

“During a routine antenatal ultrasound, we were told one of the babies seemed to have a swollen intestine and I would need to deliver immediately to avoid any potential risks. I was 36 weeks pregnant at the time.”

The second baby born experienced complications such as vomiting, feeding intolerance, and did not pass stool. Recognizing the urgency, Dr. Muhammad Alesso, Specialist Neonatology who was overseeing the newborn promptly recommended urgent intervention by Dr. Kamalesh Pal, Consultant Pediatric Urology/Surgeon.

Detailed investigations led to the discovery of a rare intra-uterine vascular accident resulting in bowel necrosis, perforation, and leakage of meconium, ultimately causing intestinal atresia (a condition in which a tubular body part doesn’t have a normal opening). The newborn underwent emergency surgery to treat the congenital anomaly, that caused the baby to have a disconnected intestine and leakage of meconium. The surgical team also included Dr. Khaled Balah, Consultant Anesthesia, whose expertise was crucial in the success of the surgery.

“Within 24 hours of birth, the newborn underwent a complex gastrointestinal surgery within the abdominal cavity, caused due to bursting of the intestine. During the surgery, the disconnected ends of the intestine were meticulously joined, aiming to restore the baby's digestive function. The surgery was crucial in preventing further complications and ensuring the infant's well-being.” said Dr. Kamalesh Pal.

Dr. Pal also emphasized on the importance of post operative management since they are in the critical growing years. The baby, who left Fakeeh University Hospital 9 days after birth has had smooth postoperative recovery with acceptance of feeding.  The team of experts at FUH are optimistic about the baby’s ability to regain normal digestive function since they can continue to grow intestine length up to the optimum requirement. Scheduled follow-ups will monitor the growth of the intestine in terms of length and width to achieve full function.

Mrs. Ronita, the newborn's mother, expressed her gratitude, saying, "The stress we experienced as new parents is unimaginable, but we are relieved that our baby is now doing well and on the path to recovery. We appreciate the expertise and care provided by the hospital. Dr. Kamalesh gave us the reassurance and confidence we needed at such a crucial time. The support we received from Dr. Alesso, Dr. Sumana and the team of NICU nurses was extraordinary, they stood by us throughout.”
