Under the directives of Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA), Tawam Hospital has successfully performed a three-dimensional laparoscopy using narrow band imaging on a 34-year-old kidney cancer patient.

The hospital that is part of PureHealth’s network, the largest healthcare platform in the Middle East, scored a ground-breaking moment in the history of treating the malicious disease.

Performed by a team of highly skilled experts, the meticulous procedure helped the patient safeguard his kidney and prevent the spread of cancerous cells, while removing the need for further painful and lengthy post-surgery treatments.

Under the leadership of Consultant Urologist Dr Aftab Ahmed, the medical team opted for a ground-breaking technique that employs narrow band imaging to precisely examine and dissect cancerous tissue from the intestine. Narrow-band imaging (NBI) is an advanced imaging technique that employs specific wavelengths of light strongly absorbed by haemoglobin, enabling improved visualisation and delineation of microvascular patterns within a cancerous area. This method enhances the surgeon's understanding of the anatomy of the operated area, ensuring precise results.

Having located and captured all cancerous tissues, the medical team was able to confirm the containment of the disease and the absence of signs of its spread. Thanks to the remarkable expertise of the team, the patient recovered quickly and was discharged only two days after the surgery. The procedure holds enormous prospect for a complete cure of cancer without the need for additional treatments like radiotherapy, chemotherapy or immunotherapy. This pioneering approach marks the beginning of a new era in the history of treating kidney cancer, thus advancing healthcare offerings in the region.

Dr Sultan Bin Karam, CEO of Tawam Hospital and the Al Ain region, said, “We are proud of the significant milestone achieved at Tawam Hospital, a resounding testament to our relentless commitment to pioneering innovative healthcare solutions. This achievement stands as a shining example of our team's exceptional expertise and our collective pursuit of excellence in delivering top-notch medical solutions for our patients. Aligned with PureHealth’s vision and SEHA’s directive, Tawam Hospital remains steadfast in our dedication to expanding the frontiers of technology and continually redefining the standards of patient care.”

Dr Dalal Al Mansouri, Chief Medical Officer of Al Ain Region, added, “The groundbreaking success in our battle against cancer fills me with immense pride and hope. I believe that customising surgical techniques for each patient while embracing new technologies and innovations is crucial. The combination of these innovative approaches opens new possibilities for safer and more effective treatments, bringing us closer to a world where cancer can be conquered without the need for additional aggressive therapies. This achievement not only marks another milestone in advancing healthcare solutions but also underscores our commitment to providing brighter futures for our patients."

The integration of 3D laparoscopes in surgical procedures offers a view akin to open surgery, reducing operating times and enhancing patient safety. Additionally, the advanced Narrow-band imaging (NBI) technique increases surgical precision, enabling improved visualisation of microvascular patterns in cancerous areas.
