UNESCO's list of World Heritage sites included Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, but climate change and its adverse effects have left the reef's current status in discussion.

The reef was facing many other concerns over the years other than climate change, and that included security concerns, ecological issues etc.

As one of the largest living structures visible from space, the reef was added to the list of World Heritage sites listed under UNESCO in the year 1981.

Its beauty and biodiversity made the reef a much loved tourist spot.

Due to the coral bleaching incidents over the years, which led to the reef losing half the corals it had, made its place on the list a little shaky.

When the UN announced that they could lose their status Australia came forward with a 2050 plan where they will work on reassuring the world that the reef will be taken care of.
