A recent study conducted by the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio, Texas, USA, indicated that the Earth experienced the fall of a series of asteroids with the size of cities every 15 million years during 2.6 billion years and 3.5 billion years ago.

The research team explained that the asteroids were much larger than the asteroid believed to have wiped out the dinosaurs on Earth, which was only seven miles wide.

Simon Marchi, a researcher at the institute, said, "We developed a new model to measure the effects of ancient globules and compare them through statistical analysis. “The current data regarding the Earth’s being hit by asteroid strikes early in its formation, indicated that these strikes were 10 times stronger than previously expected.”

Marchi added, "The Earth may have been hit by asteroids the size of the Chicxulub crater in the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, between 2.5 billion and 3.5 billion years ago."
