Blake Lively has revealed her past three Met Gala gowns have perfectly matched the red carpets at the annual fashion event.

Ahead of what would have been this year’s Met Gala, which has been postponed indefinitely due to coronavirus, Lively shared a gallery of her looks from her last three years in attendance.

“...when the carpet matches the Blakes. Met Ball 2018, 2017, 2016,” the actress captioned the photos showing her gowns perfectly showcasing the colours chosen for the red carpet each year.

In the photo from Lively’s most recent gala, she opted for a maroon and gold Versace gown with gold embroidery, which matched the swirling maroon and gold shown on the red carpet for the event’s Heavenly Bodies theme.

In 2017, Lively again chose an Atelier Versace gown, featuring draped gold beading at the bodice and a train of feathers in shades of blue for the gala’s theme: Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between.

As seen in the photo she chose, Lively’s feathers perfectly matched the cobalt blue of the carpet.

For the Simple Favour star’s 2016 look, she chose a pink and red gown for the theme Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology, which complemented the pinks and reds of the red carpet.

The realisation that the 32-year-old has been choosing her Met Gala looks down to the red carpet detail prompted shocked reactions on Instagram from fellow celebrities and gala attendees.

"How far in advance do you have to tell Anna Wintour what colour to make the carpet?” Gigi Hadid wrote.

Cazzie David jokingly asked Lively if she did “this only for the Insta slide four years later cause if so I’d understand”.

“Nobody matches better!” Lorraine Schwartz added.

In 2018, Lively confirmed to WWD that she does not use a stylist, and instead chooses her own outfits.

“It's a lot of work but I mean, it’s not hard in that we all dress ourselves every morning,” she said, adding: “So once you have the clothes, you just pick out what to wear like any other human being does. But it’s easier because you have access to clothes and so it’s not that hard.”

However, she did acknowledge it is possible to prepare herself for a red carpet event without a stylist because “a lot of it is I have relationships with the designers.”

As for why she chooses to dress herself, Lively said it has to do with being able to express herself creatively, as well as an interest in fashion and design.

“I just like it. I love design and I love fashion and it’s a way to be creative. In my job I get to be creative, but it’s over a period of time and so many other people are involved, whereas this is a beginning, middle and end, and I get to be creative and there’s an end date in the near future,” she said.
