Killing the thrill of tournament

As an ardent cricket lover I am dismayed with the ongoing World Cup. The assumption that the new round-robin format which has teams playing at least nine matches each would have fans glued to their TV sets, is not holding ground (“Warner makes hay to hit WC top score as Tigers fall short,” June 21, Gulf Today).

The organizers should have paid more attention to the weather before deciding on the venue. Because with the English weather behaving the way it is, a host of matches are being washed out, killing the thrill of a tournament which is the high point of the year’s international cricket calendar. For example, the truncated India-Pak tie could have gone Pakistan’s way with the Babar Azam and Fakhar Zaman holding on a tough opening partnership, but the skies opened and India made merry. Hope we can have some good cricket in the coming days.
