Kavita Chaudhary of 'Udaan,' inspired generation of women to become police officers.

Her nephew confirmed her death. The veteran actress was famous for her role as Kalyani Singh (an IPS officer) in the 1989 TV show ‘Udaan.’ The actress, who was battling poor health for a long time, passed away in Amritsar. Her last rites were performed on Friday.

As per media reports, she breathed her last at Parvati Devi Hospital in Amritsar where she was being treated.

‘Udaan,’ which was written and directed by Kavita herself, aired in 1989. The show was based on the life of her sister Kanchan Chaudhary Bhattacharya, who became the second IPS officer after Kiran Bedi.

Kavita inspired a lot of young women as at the time there was very less female representation in the police force. ‘Udaan’ gained immense popularity and made her a household name. The show was re-telecast on Doordarshan during COVID-19 pandemic.

CINTAA mourns Kavita Chaudhary's demise

The Cine & TV Artistes Association (CINTAA) mourned the demise of Kavita Chaudhry. "CINTAA expresses its condolence on the demise of Kavita Chaudhary,” it said in a social media post.

In a condolence post, actor Amit Behl said: "RIP Kavita Chaudhary. Is baar aapne lambi udaan bhar li, Naman," tagging NSD and CINTAA.

Chaudhary was known for her role as an IPS officer in the popular television serial 'Udaan' telecast on Doordarshan (1989-1991). She later became a household name with the ‘Lalita-ji’ series of ads for a detergent brand.

An alumnus of the prestigious National School of Drama (NSD), Chaudhary’s co-star in 'Udaan' was acclaimed actor-filmmaker Shekhar Kapur.

Kavita Chaudhary had two other big TV shows, 'Your Honour' and 'IPS Diaries', besides other contributions to the glamour and entertainment world.
