Beyond the pitch: How mega-events like the World Cup are fast-tracking the GCC’s economic future

From Riyadh to Doha, global sporting spectacles have evolved from mere branding exercises into high-octane catalysts for infrastructure, investment, and long-term GDP diversification.

For decades, hosting major sporting events like World Cups or the Olympics Games was viewed as an opportunity to boost a country's global profile and capture the world’s attention.

Today, the GCC is rewriting that playbook, with these events not just used to promote the countries, but also being hardwired into the region’s ambitious vision agendas to permanently reshape tourism, technology, and foreign investment.

The impact of the 2022 World Cup

The Gulf hosted Formula One races long before 2022, but the Qatar World Cup has been a game-changer for the wider region. Not only did it allow Qatar to further re-establish the Gulf as a credible host for major sporting events, but it also accelerated infrastructure development, with this investment in infrastructure and transport helping to stimulate long-term economic growth.

According to the IMF, the large public investment programme set up by the Qatari government was the catalyst for considerable growth of the country’s non-hydrocarbon economy, boosting its eco-credentials and likely creating new job opportunities to stimulate economic development.

How GCC marketers can make the most of major sporting events

For marketers, the opportunity extends far beyond tournament sponsorships or high-profile advertising placements - both of which are still valuable. The brands that will create lasting value are those that use major sporting events to tell authentic stories about the region's culture, innovation and economic ambition.

Rather than focusing solely on visibility during the competition(s), marketers should develop campaigns that connect global audiences with the GCC's heritage and future ambitions, ensuring their investment delivers lasting impact long after the events have finished.

However, at the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM), we believe that lasting impact depends on more than ambitious campaigns it requires marketing professionals to have the capabilities to lead in an increasingly digital, data-driven and globally competitive environment.

Across the GCC, CIM works with organisations to develop these capabilities through professional marketing training and development, helping teams build the strategic, commercial and leadership skills needed to drive sustainable business growth and maximise opportunities created by the region's transformation.

The most effective campaigns in the GCC will move beyond sponsorship into storytelling that reflects cultural identity and long-term ambition. With the rising cost of global event marketing, AI and data are becoming critical to maximise reach and ROI across diverse international audiences. Ultimately, the real impact is measured not during the event, but in sustained shifts in perception, tourism, and economic growth.

The opportunities to take ahead of the 2034 World Cup

Saudi Arabia hosting the 2034 FIFA World Cup represents the next chapter in the GCC's economic transformation. As preparations gather pace, investment will extend well beyond stadiums, driving growth across hospitality, transport, digital infrastructure and entertainment while aligning with the country's Vision 2030, built on the three pillars of a vibrant society, a thriving economy, and an ambitious nation.

For businesses and marketers across the GCC, the tournament presents another opportunity to help shape how the region is perceived on the global stage. Success will come from building authentic, long-term connections with international audiences rather than focusing solely on the tournament itself.

Across the GCC, CIM works with organisations to develop these capabilities through professional marketing training, development and membership, helping teams build the strategic, commercial and leadership skills needed to drive sustainable business growth and maximise the opportunities created by the region's transformation. Through globally recognised qualifications, professional accreditation and access to a community of marketing practitioners, CIM supports marketers at every stage of their career development.

As the countdown to 2034 continues, the World Cup stands as a milestone within a much broader journey. The decisions made today will influence regional competitiveness for years to come, leaving a legacy defined not by a single tournament, but by the lasting value created for future generations and global partners.
