For decades, India’s space programme has been one of the country’s greatest technological achievements. From reaching Mars to landing near the Moon’s south pole, India has consistently demonstrated that ambitious space exploration does not require enormous budgets. Through sustained investment in science and engineering, the country has built advanced capabilities, trained generations of experts and earned global recognition for delivering complex missions efficiently.
India is now entering a new chapter with the rapid growth of its private space economy. A major milestone came with Skyroot Aerospace’s successful orbital launch of Vikram-1. Its first orbital mission, Mission Aagaman, successfully placed its payload into low-Earth orbit on the first attempt, demonstrating that India’s private sector can transform the technological foundation established by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) into commercial capability.
The achievement marks more than the success of a single rocket. It highlights India’s transition from a government-led space programme to a broader ecosystem where public institutions, private companies, startups, researchers and international partners contribute to innovation and growth.
India enters this phase with significant advantages, including decades of expertise, a vast engineering workforce, competitive costs, established launch infrastructure and one of the world’s most respected space agencies. Private companies are building on ISRO’s legacy, which includes the Mars Orbiter Mission, the Chandrayaan lunar missions, the historic Moon landing in 2023 and the Aditya mission to study the Sun. These achievements have also strengthened India’s reputation for delivering cost-effective space missions.
India’s space economy is valued at approximately $8.4 billion, while more than 400 private space startups have emerged since the sector opened to greater private participation in 2020. The country aims to capture around 8 per cent of the global space market.
The emerging industry is also highly diverse. Skyroot Aerospace develops small satellite launch vehicles, Pixxel focuses on Earth observation, Bellatrix Aerospace builds propulsion systems, and Agnikul Cosmos has pioneered 3D-printed rocket engines. Together, these companies are creating an integrated commercial space ecosystem rather than relying on a single technology.
The future space economy extends well beyond rocket launches. Satellites are increasingly essential for communications, navigation, agriculture, weather forecasting, disaster management, climate monitoring, logistics and national security. As reliance on space-based infrastructure grows, demand for launch services, satellites, propulsion systems and space-based data will continue to increase.
India is well positioned to benefit from this expansion. The country has launched more than 430 foreign satellites and over 144 domestic satellites while expanding facilities at Sriharikota and developing another launch site in Tamil Nadu. Partnerships with NASA, the European Space Agency and Japan further strengthen India’s capabilities.
Beyond commercial opportunities, space technology supports economic development, scientific progress and national security. Advances in rockets, guidance systems, avionics, communications and satellites strengthen technological self-reliance, generate skilled employment and expand advanced manufacturing.
India’s long-term ambitions include the Gaganyaan human spaceflight programme, an Indian space station by 2035 and a crewed lunar mission by 2040. As private companies expand commercial launches, satellite manufacturing and space services, ISRO can focus on frontier science and more advanced missions. Although global competition remains intense, India has repeatedly transformed technological strengths into internationally competitive industries. Skyroot’s Vikram-1 mission therefore represents not only a successful launch but also the emergence of a confident private space industry. If this momentum continues, India has the potential to become one of the defining powers in the global space economy.
