The Emirates Reprographic Rights Management Association (ERRA), a UAE national non-profit association dedicated to preserving the rights of authors and publishers, has achieved a significant milestone by being granted Ad hoc observer status at the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO).

The approval came during the WIPO Assemblies’ meetings held at the WIPO headquarters in Geneva. This development positions ERRA among national non-governmental organisations therefore invited to attend meetings of WIPO Assemblies and Unions as an observer, aligning with applicable principles.

Daren Tang, Director-General of WIPO, highlighted the importance of the attendance of members at the general assembly, stating: “The vision of building a more inclusive IP ecosystem, of bringing the benefits of IP to all, is not just this administration’s vision; it is the collective vision of the WIPO community. We work better and deliver more thanks to your support, input, and collaboration – and we will continue to be open and transparent as this is the best and most effective way of working together and delivering results.”

The recognition as an Ad hoc observer grants ERRA access to meetings in WIPO’s subsidiary bodies, including specific WIPO Committee sessions. It also offers ERRA the opportunity to participate in discussions and policy directions related to intellectual property, providing insights into the latest trends and future developments in the field. ERRA’s involvement in this global stakeholder platform positions the UAE’s creative economy on the universal map of intellectual property, endorsing the country’s commitment to furthering intellectual property protection.

“This achievement marks a momentous step for ERRA as it establishes its presence on a global stage,” said Majd Alshehhi, Director of ERRA. “As an Emirati non-profit organisation, the accreditation of observer status strengthens our commitment to advocating for intellectual property protection and promoting the interests of authors and publishers. Being part of this multistakeholder platform allows us to voice our perspectives and contribute to shaping the future of intellectual property.”

ERRA’s inclusion among other stakeholder organisations and interest groups fosters the growth of the UAE’s publishing sector. The association will leverage this opportunity to enhance its efforts in supporting creative talent of all rightholders while advancing sustainable development goals towards championing the interests of authors, publishers, and the creative industries in the UAE and beyond.
