Tunnel discovered in Egypt’s Great Pyramid could hold secret to Khufu’s burial chamber

Egyptian antiquities officials announced on Thursday the discovery of a hidden 9-meter-long passage behind the main entrance to the Great Pyramid of Giza, which they said could lead to more discoveries.

The latest discovery came within the framework of the "Exploration of the Pyramids" project, which since 2015 has been using modern technology.

The technology is a mix of infrared thermography, muon radiography imaging and 3D reconstruction, to reveal the hidden secrets of the pyramid, which is the last remaining of the seven ancient wonders of the world to this day.

All of the procedures researchers say are non-invasive and non-destructive techniques.
Mostafa Waziri, secretary general of Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities, said the unfinished corridor was likely built, either to lighten the weight of the pyramid above the main entrance, which lies 7 meters below it, or to lighten the weight of a room or other undiscovered space.

The Great Pyramid was built during the reign of Pharaonic King Khufu, as a huge tomb for him around 2560 BC.

With a height of 146 meters, it was the tallest building built by humans until the construction of the Eiffel Tower in Paris in 1889.
