Turkey changes its name to ‘Türkiye’

The United Nations announced its adoption and registration of the name of Turkey in the form "Türkiye" (tur-key-YAY) instead of "Turkey" in foreign languages, at the request of Ankara.

The local news agency quoted the spokesman for the United Nations Secretary-General, Stephane Dujarric, that the organisation had received a “letter from the Turkish Foreign Minister, Mevlut Cavusoglu, addressed to Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, requesting to use the Türkiye instead of the usual Turkey formula in the international arena.

The UN spokesman explained that changing the name of the country from one format to another, entered into force from the moment the message was received.

Turkey had submitted a request to the United Nations to register its name in other languages officially approved by the international organization in the form of Türkiye, as it is written in Turkish according to Russia Today.

On Tuesday, Cavusoglu wrote on his Twitter account that he had sent a letter to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, to register Turkey's name in the foreign languages approved by the organization that use Latin letters, in the form "Türkiye".

Local media that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had previously stated that the name “Türkiye” is the best representative and expressive of the culture, civilization and values of the Turkish people, recommending in this context that companies use the phrase “Made in Türkiye” instead of “Made in Turkey” on their goods intended for export.
