Espresso helps prevent Alzheimer's and Parkinson’s development, reveals study

A study by Italian researchers revealed that espresso coffee can prevent Alzheimer's disease.

The researchers emphasized that previous research linked the disease to the tau protein, which malfunctions and collects in thread-like structures called fibrils, and helps increase infection.

Prof Mariabina D’Onofrio, a biologist at the University of Verona, Italy, said, “Espresso consumption in moderation, or sometimes in excess, has positive health benefits, specifically in neuroprotection against Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.”

The Italian team's research proved that "espresso coffee reduced the accumulation of tau proteins to become non-toxic or harmful to the brain," saying, "Based on the bioavailability of coffee components in the brain, and on the results of our study, we expect that moderate consumption of coffee may provide a sufficient amount of biologically active molecules to act as adapters for tau protein accumulation and its toxicity," noting that, despite the need for more research, their initial results could pave the way for finding or devising treatments for the disease.

The study came to confirm the findings of previous research that linked drinking coffee to brain health, as a study published in 2021 found that people who drank two to three cups of coffee and two to three cups of tea per day had a 28% reduced risk of dementia compared to those who did not drink either.
