This year, unlike the last few years, is not going to be one of endless blockbusters being released at the cinema. We are taking a look at how 2020 has far fewer blockbuster releases and if this will give more original movies a chance to shine.

Event movies are films that become must-see sensations due to media hype and advertising. The build up to the release of such movies is huge. We are talking about Star Wars and Avenger type movies, both of which have no releases this year. With less event movies being released we turn our attention to other releases.

Last Night in Soho by director Edgar Wright is due out for release later this year. The psychological thriller stars Anya-Taylor Joy, Matt Smith and Thomasin McKenzie and tells the tale of young girl who is able to time travel back to 1960s London where she meets her idol.

With an ensemble cast led by Frances McDormand and directed by Wes Anderson, The French Dispatch should do well at the box office in spite of it not being a blockbuster with flying super heroes. With a budget of $25 million, the comedy-drama is due out in September.
