A fire broke out at a dock in Hong Kong in the early hours of Sunday morning, setting fire to fuel tanks as they passed along a line of parked yachts, drowning at least 10 before firefighters put out the blaze.

Authorities in the Asian financial hub said at least 16 ships, including those that sank, caught fire, but there were no serious injuries.

The fire started at the marina in the city's Aberdeen area at 2.30am and took more than six hours to put out.

Explosions of fuel tanks were heard in video footage, with thick smoke rising to cover the dock and adjacent towers.

The Fire Services Department reported that about 35 people had been rescued from the ships.
